Day 6 - Darren Xiangzi Kreps

When we read (on Sonia’s blog) about a little boy in China who needed life saving heart surgery we couldn’t turn our backs and just forget him.

In November 2012, after seven months of expedited paper chasing, we welcomed Darren Xiangzi into our hearts and our family.

One year ago today Darren had his life saving heart surgery. He went from being a blue little boy who got out of breath just eating and couldn’t run, climb stairs, or even play without getting winded to…

…a healthy five year old little boy whose favorite activity is RACING his brothers and sisters around the house!

Darren was L-TGA, ASD, VSD, PDA, dexicardia, and pulmonary atresia. He had a very complex heart surgery at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s hospital. Dr. Bove performed the Senning and Rastelli procedures. We are forever grateful to Dr. Bove, the staff, and God for saving Darren’s life!

Having complex CHD makes you a life-long patient – Heart Kids are INCREDIBLE!

Much to our surprise, Darren has become something of a local mini-celebrity.  His story was picked up in by several newspapers, we were invited to tell his story on the radio, and NBC’s Detroit affiliate, WDIV, ran this story about him.  Good thing he’s not shy … but WE are!

Our brave boy was in the cath. lab this week receiving a stent. His left pulmonary artery was narrowed and we are hoping this fix corrects the problem. In time he will need his conduit replaced. Other procedures and surgeries may be needed over the years. Traveling this journey with Darren is SO worth it! I can’t begin to describe what an AMAZING child Darren is – silly, snuggly, curious, full of energy, demanding, and truly a gift from God!
